We had a really special commission from Mrs L, who originally hails from South Africa but now lives in Kelsall, Cheshire. She wanted us to create six brilliant chairs, each featuring all six colours of the South African flag – what a fantastic way to celebrate her heritage!

Mrs L was after six mismatched chairs (all different styles) that would work perfectly in her garden. Each chair needed to showcase the South African flag colours whilst being tough enough to handle our unpredictable British weather. We used paints from the Vintage with Grace furniture paint range throughout.
We found six lovely old chairs in different styles and set about transforming them into something really special. After giving each one a thorough clean and sand down, we applied a coat of white undercoat to get them ready for their colourful makeover.
Then came the really detailed bit – applying the different flag colours to each individual part of every chair. We lined all six chairs up in our workshop and worked systematically, applying one colour at a time across all the chairs, then moving on to the next colour. This way, each chair gradually built up all six flag colours in different sections.
The whole process took about three weeks because each chair needed four coats in total – quite time-consuming but absolutely worth it for the stunning finish! Once all the colours were perfect, we added two coats of tough, hard-wearing clear varnish to make sure they’d stand up to outdoor use.
Mrs L was absolutely delighted when we delivered the chairs personally to her home in Kelsall. She now has six unique pieces that celebrate her South African roots whilst being perfect for enjoying her Cheshire garden. Another great example of giving unwanted furniture a completely new life with real meaning behind it.
